What is Minions of Mirth?
Minions Of Mirth is a 3D MUD (Multi User Dungeon) Its purpose is for you to explore, make friends, and level your character up by fighting
monsters. The setting for Minions of Mirth, is a Lord of the Rings style Medieval time, though not directly based on Lord of the Rings story,
many elements from the story are found here. For example, you can play as a Hobbit, or an orc, et cetera.
Getting started:
First off, you will need copy of Minions of Mirth. You can purchase Minions of Mirth
Here
Once ordered, and downloaded, you will need to follow the installers steps.
After it has installed, start up Minions of Mirth. Once it has loaded you will see several things we can do, Single Player, Multiplayer, Options,
and Live update. Before we do anything, we will want to do an update. Click the "Live Update" button.
Once the update is complete you may want to look in options before we begin playing, and see if there might need to be things changed. You may
not have a computer best suited for gaming. In this case I would suggest setting "Visable distance" slider down to the far left. Clicking the
"Low" Button for graphics detail may also be necessary.
After setting Minions of Mirth up for your computer, you may want to look in the Controls tab of options, perhaps you are used to a configuration
of another game, and wish to set up Minions of Mirth's to have alike key binds. Here you can do that.
Character Creation
Lets begin to play. Here you can choose Single Player or Multi Player. If you have an internet connection, I would suggest Multiplayer, where you can interact with other players who can help you.
Single Player
In Singleplayer you will not interact with other players in game, only you and the "Mobs" will be there. Mobs are "Moving objects" They are the
Bots, or the NPCs. NPCs differ from Bots. When I say bots I'm refering to the monsters which you will fight, NPCs are the merchants, who do not
move(Technically aren't Mobs) but you can still interact with. A merchant, or a quest giving bot are examples.
Multi Player
MoM is at its best in multiplayer. where up to 1024 players can be on one world at once! All interacting, all helping each other out. Note: In Single player you can chat with other players in the global chat server. Here you can ask players questions you have, or just chat. (This option only available if you have an internet connection.). I highly recommend new players to a good Multiplayer server. people can aid you as you begin finacially, or just giving helpful advise. You can also ally with up to 6 other players in multiplayer, making fighting go quicker, and EXP gain faster. We will talk about EXP in a later chapter.
Lets get the 'party' started!
Ok, you log into your account, (your log in info should have been emailed to you), and found a server you would like to play at. Once you choose your server, your characters cannot be transfered to another. So please choose carefully, some servers may have communities you would rather not hang around with. You might have leveled a character up well on that server, and feel bad about leaving it. Test various servers out, and find the one that you feel home at.
Now, lets get a party going. A party is your group of characters you will play with, up to 6 characters. The more characters you have, the faster you will kill monsters, though the slower you will gain EXP. Some prefer one character, others like an army of six. It is suggested for new users to get used to Minions of Mirth's gameplay to play with only one character.
The more characters you have the harder it is to manage all of them. Buying armor, Weapondry, and managing spells will be a challenge. But if you are up to it, in the long run you will be more powerful than just one.
The Races
There are several Races to choose from. each with their own base stats. Stats are used by various classes for various reasons. Some races cannot use certain classes. Some you can only choose for a certain Realm. There are two Realms, Minions of Darkness, and Fellowship of Light. On some servers these two realms can go into conflict with each other.
Humans.
Humans stats are perfectly balanced. They are good at just about anything. They also have one the the best choice in classes.
Gnomes.
Fair fighters, they make ok archers. their MND stat is quite nice too.
Trolls.
Trolls are battle savvy, they are excellent at fighting, though are quite dim. and make terrible wizards.
Ogres.
Thing of an Ogre is a more balanced Troll. They are good at just about anything, but are more geared towards fighting. They also are stronger to disease than most other races.
Drakken.
Arguably the best class in the game. Think of a Drakken as a human, with about 40% more to all stats, and a slight EXP Penalty. They also catch colds easily.
Orcs.
Like a human, with stats geared more to fighting.
Goblins.
Well fortified, these creatures are much like humans, though with more Health Points.
Dark Elves.
Swordsman, Wizard, and Archer all rolled into one, though they accel particuarly in Archery.
Elves.
Identical to the Dark Elf, these elves enjoy the company of friendly people, as opposed to Minions of Darkness.
Halflings.
The classic Hobbit. These short creatures are not the best choice for wizards. but accel as theives, and to some extent, fighters.
Dwarves.
Fine fighters indeed, they accel at many things. And look great with an Axe!
Titans.
Made of stone these are much like Drakken. Their penalty is not on EXP gained, but on class selection, which is very limited.
The Classes
Classes define how your stats will be used, and if they will be used to their fullest. One thing to keep in mind is that once in game, you can choose two extra classes (Multi classing) giving you the skills of those two extra classes.
There is great detail explained on classes
Here
Notice: After picking your race you may add 100 stats to and stats you wish, the maximum is 50 to one stat, however. Use these extra stats wisely. As will be explained in Multiclassing section below.
Multi-classing
Multi-classing is permanent, it will last the rest of the game. You get to choose a second class at level 5, and a third, at 15. You must take some time to think about your class, maybe take outside suggestion from other players. When picking a class and race, and you are at the point of choosing additianal stats. here is the moment you should be thinking about the other classes you will choose. Say you wish to be an Ogre, but you want to be a Primary class Warrior and Secondary Wizard. your wizard class will struggle unless you choose better wizard related stats. (MND, WIS, MYS)
When multi-classed it is also essential that you keep each your classes levels close. or your multi-classes will become useless. your EXP Bar will become 2, one for each class (3 when you pick a third). But they also become sliders, that change the income of EXP divided into each class.
Game play.
Here is where we finally discuss how to play. First let me guide you through the first task that you have. The lower left corner of your screen you will see a chat box. The upper chat is server to you messages, the lower is for player to player chat. Up above the two chat windows you will see a row of bottons. mouse over them, and look in the lower center of the screen to see what they do. Hit the "Character menu" button, it should either close or open a new window. if it closes a HUD (heads up display, any of those windows with information on them), click it again to bring it back up.
On the character window you will see several Tabs (Top rows of buttons) Click the Inventory Tab. Clicking an item in your inventory will have you hold it. Once you are hlding it you can double click it on another player, or move it to a certain button. Such as Expunge, holding an item and clicking expunge with it will throw that item in the trash. Never to be seen again. You can equip certain items. Right click a item to get info, such as what stats or benefits it will grant if you can equip it. Pick up the equipable, aand one of your slots will flash green for you to place it in. With the item on your cursor, click on the flashing green icon (Equipment Slot) to equip it.
Lets now look for a unique item in your inventory. Every class begins with one. This is for the "Starter quest" Right click on the item, and move your mouse over each item until you find one that stands out. It should have in its description where they want you to take it.
Next we decide what archetype we are. An acretype is a broad description of what type of class you are. There are four
Rogue: Thief, Bard, Assassin
Mage: Wizard, Tempest, Shaman, Revealer, Necromancer
Religious: Druid, Cleric, Monk
Fighter: Warrior, Ranger, Paladin, Barbarian, Doom Knight
Once you have your archetype, on your Tome (The HUD with the chat boxed and button) Find the button which opens your tracking window. Once this is done you must find your Guild. A guild is where your archetype trainer resides. Your trainer will teach you new skills for your class. Or, if you are not of the class, the trainer can train you into one, when you are ready to multi-class. Find your trainer. the one the unique items info tell you to go to. give the trainer your item and he will give you EXP, and a unique class-specific weapon.
Lets go hunt some Orcs
Not quite orcs yet! For now you will need to find some nice low level Mobs. You will need to find some on your own :) That is what the game is about, exploration. Though, the low level Mobs will be around where you started. If you move to another zone, you know that there is danger ahead.
Should you explore now other zones, or wait? Yes! exploration is better at lower levels, for one thing if you die you will not recieve a penalty until level 5, where you loose EXP.
EXPerience
Experience is a unit of measure how long you've been fighting stuff. and you attain ranks, and levels through it. In your stats Tab of your Character Info window, you will see a Bar labled "Primary" That is the EXP that is going into your level. Once it is full you level, and it restarts back to nothing, until you kill some more Mobs. As you gain levels above the Mobs you are fighting you gain less and less EXP from them. Once you are 10 levels above them you stop getting EXP all together.
Miscellaneous
There's so much that new people should learn, it's hard to organize, so here is an area where I'll list some important, or not so important info.
When you right click a weapon, it will list two number between a slash, like for instance, 5/11 that is Damage / Delay, Damage is better higher, Delay better lower.
You can quickly sell an item by Shift-double clicking an item at the inventory.
Macroing. Making Macros is one of the most powerful feature in the game. right click a blank square in your party member info square, and you will open the macro editor. Here you can do stuff like /cast spell name or /skill skillname and set delays. then when you hit a number (Lets say you put it in slot 2, hitting the number key 2 will activate it) It will set off all the skills, when you want them to. You can also have a macro on one party member control another for instance: *MyOtherName* /skill Kick That will ahve you character named "MyOtherName" use the kick skill. Macroing is an absolute must to learn if you are in a party of more than 1 character. It makes casting buff spells much easier, and it lets you coordinate attacks better.
